Who will win the BNA at the 2022 Grammy Awards? | Grammys.com

2021-11-25 06:35:31 By : Ms. SAMIRA CHEN

In recent years, the category of best newcomers has been dominated by women. Five of the past six winners are women, from Megan Trainer to Megan West stallion. This year's 10 nominees are even divided into men and women, making the competition particularly interesting.

There are also some more experienced performances, such as the indie rock band Glass Animals, which made their debut in 2014. However, this is not so unusual, because the BNA Awards are designed to recognize artists who have made breakthroughs and have significantly influenced the music industry-and this year's roster did just that.

At the 2022 Grammy Awards, the two young talents Olivia Rodrigo and The Kid LAROI will face each other head-on. They will face one of the biggest breakthroughs in country music (Jimmy Allen), the sample queen of rap (Saweetie), the disciple of Kendrick Lamar (Baby Keem), the illustrious British (Arlo Parks), alternative stars (Japanese breakfast), Pakistan's first female nominee (Arooj Aftab) and eight-time Grammy Award winner (FINNEAS).

No matter who you support, GRAMMY.com will provide you with a guide to this year's best newcomer nominees. Learn more about the latest wave of rising stars here.

Arooj Aftab is a singer, composer and producer from Lahore, Pakistan. Since the early 2000s, she has been working hard to let people hear her music.

She was one of the first Pakistani musicians to promote her music in her home country via the Internet, and paved the way for the independent Pakistani music scene through her popular songs "Hallelujah" and "Mera Pyaar". Aftab made history with her nomination for best newcomer because she was the first woman to be nominated for a Pakistani woman.

Now that three albums have been released, Aftab's music continues to attract fans and critics, delivering poetic lyrics with her silky voice and a voice that blends new era and classical minimalism.

This year's Vulture Prince gave birth to her biggest streaming hit "Mohabbat" to date, which appeared on Barack Obama's summer 2021 playlist.

As the only country artist in this year's best newcomer category, Jimmy Allen immediately influenced the genre with his sincere debut in 2018, "Best Shot".

Starting his career with a number one consecutively ranked single on country radio (his belt love song "Let Me Want" reached the top in 2019), Allen continued to stride forward and became the first black artist this year Won the New Male Artist of the Year Award in the Country Music Academy Awards.

The 2020 EP Betty James from Milton, Delaware-and the luxurious "golden edition" he released earlier this year-showcased his versatility and brought his country style to Noah Sayler In collaboration with popular singers such as Si ("This Is Us"), R&B stars Babyface ("Forever") and Monica ("Pray"), and popular Latin producer Pitbull ("Flavor").

His talent has also attracted the attention of superstars: in what the singer-songwriter calls the "ultimate dream" career, Allen recently appeared on Elton John's Lockdown Sessions track "Beauty In The Bones".

Two years after Baby Keem was first recognized for his influential debut "Orange Soda," the Californian rapper will usher in the year of his life in 2021.

The 21-year-old worked with Travis Scott, Kanye West, and his cousin Kendrick Lamar, who collaborated with Keem on the appropriate track "Family Ties." (The two collaborated for the first time in 2018 to produce an episode for the Black Panther soundtrack curated by Kendrick. Keem is the first artist Lamar collaborated with Dave Free, pgLang.)

"Family Ties" is the latest single in Keem's first album The Melodic Blue, which ranks No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart of all genres. Kim is touted for pushing boundaries in the rap/hip-hop field, just like Lamar has done throughout his career.

"I don't want to do anything in the ordinary way," he told Lamar in an interview he did for iD Magazine in 2020. "I want to reflect my feelings more in the music, using the chords I like, because but I don’t have too many songs with chords that I really like and feel. I think I’ve been trying s*** Can tell a story independently...I think now everyone knows that I am in some completely different ***."

Fans of Billie Eilish are familiar with the name: FINNEAS is not only her brother, but also the curator and producer behind this young talented music.

Won eight Grammy Awards in Eilish’s musical works-including Song of the Year, Album of the Year, Record of the Year (twice) and Non-Classical Music Producer of the Year-FINNEAS has further amazed fans as a solo artist His own rights.

The 24-year-old young man released his film debut album "The Optimist" in October, and he wrote and produced all 13 tracks himself.

He is the only 2022 newcomer candidate who has been nominated (not to mention winning); with this nomination, FINNEAS has shared another Grammy honor with his sister who won the award in 2020.

Another name that may be familiar is that Glass Animals is one of the more well-known artists in this year's rookie lineup.

This British indie rock band has released three albums since it was founded in 2010, and in 2014 with hypnotic "Gooey" boarded their first album. But it was their 2020 single "Heat Waves" that allowed the band to move from an indie rock star to the mainstream.

The song’s vigorous beat and wave-like melody made it a very contagious radio hit, which won Glass Animals their first place in alternative radio stations and entered the Billboard Hot 100 list for the first time. (Enter the top 10).

Subsequently, their third studio album Dreamland in 2020 became their first top 5 album in the UK and the first top 10 LP in the United States. This breakthrough finally made Glass Animals nominated for best newcomer, although Their catalog is nearly ten years old.

Since 2013, Korean-American musician Michelle Zauner has been performing under the nickname "Japanese breakfast" (she has three permanent band members, alternately referred to as indie projects and indie rock bands).

Similar to Glass Animals, Japan Breakfast made a breakthrough in 2021 with the lead single "Be Sweet" from the band's third album Jubilee.

Perhaps the new success stems from Zauner's own personal happiness, which inspired the change in pace of the LP-Japanese pre-breakfast project, which is the result of the pain that Zauner experienced after her mother's death.

"It was definitely a conscious choice,'Well, I wrote two very dark albums and a book about sadness, I want to write something else,'" Zuna told GRAMMY.com before Jubilee's release . "A lot of records are about struggling or figuring out how to do this or making a decision for myself to make me accept it again."

Charlton Kenneth Jeffrey Howard-better known as The Kid LAROI-first when he teamed up with the late Juice WRLD on the 2020 track "Go" It attracted people's attention.

At the end of 2020, the Australian singer and rapper released his breakthrough hit single "Without You", an acoustic ballad that was mixed with Miley Cyrus earlier this year.

But it was his collaboration with Justin Bieber, the highly infectious “Stay” that really made him go to the world, accumulating nearly 2 billion streams, and ranking top six on the Billboard Hot 100 list. week.

The Kid LAROI, who is only 18 years old, is willing to become a disadvantaged group, which is closely related to his generation and beyond, including superstars such as Ed Sheeran and Elton John, who all call him "the greatest artist on earth."

Although she only released music for three years, Arlo Parks (real name Anaïs Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho) has been writing poems and turning them into songs since she was a teenager.

Since her successful debut in "Coke" in 2018, the British singer-songwriter has been delivering vivid and sensitive narratives, and finally signed a recording contract with London-based independent record company Transgressive Records in 2019.

In January, Parks released her first album, Collapsed in Sunbeams, which included 12 songs and expanded her alternative rock sound through jazz and low-fidelity production.

The project won her the Mercury of the Year Award, which is one of the most prestigious awards in the British music industry to recognize the album of the year.

This year, Olivia Rodrigo (Olivia Rodrigo) went from a Disney star to a global celebrity thanks to her smash hit debut, a belt-worthy piano-driven ballad "driver's license."

Rodrigo made fun of this ubiquitous song on social media in 2020, breaking two Spotify records, and making the singer-songwriter the youngest artist ever ranked first in the Hot 100 for eight consecutive years. Set a record week for the first time.

But this is just the beginning of Rodrigo. She has released five singles from her critically acclaimed album Sour, including another number one with the lively Paramore-nicking "good 4 u", which makes Rodrigo Another album of the two became the first album with two No. 1 debuts.

At only 18 years old, Rodrigo showed the lyrical ability of an experienced veteran. He was touted by Cardi B and Rodrigo's personal hero Taylor Swift.

If she wins, she will be the third youngest winner after LeAnn Rimes, who was 14 when she won in 1997, and Billie Eilish, who was 17 when she won in 2019.

After becoming a viral star on social media in 2017, Saweetie broke into the rap world for the first time in 2019 with his confident single "My Type".

The California-born rapper Diamonté Harper has released two other singles. The most recent one was her hottest single to date, with the club’s Doja Cat collaboration "Best Friend". Several of her songs subtly sample the hits of the past, including Petey Pablo's "Freek-A-Leek" in "My Type".

It turns out that she is also a businesswoman: In addition to launching her own record company (Icy Records) in 2018, Saweetie also collaborates with multiple brands, including PrettyLittleThing's clothing and jewelry collections and McDonald's Famous Orders collections.

Saweetie's debut album "Pretty B**** Music" is expected to be released in 2022, but she has not shown any signs of slowing down.

This year, the Recording Academy abolished the nomination review committee in the general and genre fields. This change means that all nominations for the Grammy Awards in general and genre areas will now be determined by a majority vote of the voting members of the Recording Academy.

Previously, many categories in these fields used highly skilled music peers who represented and voted in their genre communities to finally select nominees.

With this change, the results of Grammy nominations and winners will be returned to the hands of the entire Recording Academy voting member institutions, further verifying the process of peer recognition.

Starting this year, Grammy voters can now vote in 10 specific genre field categories within no more than three fields; this is a decrease from the previous 15 specific type field categories. This major change ensures that music creators vote in their most knowledgeable and qualified category.

Starting in 2021, the six existing process areas will be merged into two areas: the display area and the production area. This change allows the Grammy Awards to better reflect the overlapping peer groups within the voter member institutions.

In any newly merged field, voters can choose the categories they think are eligible to vote, respect the category voting restrictions, and will not be excessively restricted by the three-field restrictions. This facilitates the integrity of the Grammys by accepting and using the expertise of voters without restricting their choices or contributions due to the recent field restrictions imposed by reducing the number of categories in which voters can vote.

The fields are updated as follows:

In other news, the Recording Academy recently released the latest Grammy Awards rules and guidelines, reflecting the new changes in the Grammy Awards ceremony process in 2022. The following are some new changes:

Looking ahead, all accredited artists, including featured artists, songwriters of new materials, producers, recording engineers, mixers and mastering engineers, are eligible to be nominees and winners in the Grammy Annual Album category.

Previously, the rule stipulated that all artists, songwriters, producers, recording engineers, mixers and mastering engineers must obtain at least 33% or more of the playing time.

The category previously called "Best Dance Recording" has been renamed "Best Dance/Electronic Recording". This category is suitable for recordings with important electronic musical instruments, usually based on rhythmic dance beats.

In the field of classical music, singles that are not albums will now qualify for five classical categories, including Best Orchestral Performance, Best Chorus Performance, Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance, Best Classical Instrumental Solo Performance, and Best Contemporary Classical composition.

In the field of visual media music, a clearer limit has been updated on the number of winners of the soundtrack for the best arrangement of visual media.

In the field of music films, music-related documentaries must now contain at least 51% of performance-based material or separate music videos to jointly create a visual album (if the videos are packaged and imported together as a cohesive movie). Although dramatic feature films and biopics are not eligible, films with fictional elements are eligible.

Elsewhere, a second technical Grammy was added, reserved exclusively for companies, organizations, or institutions. This award is optional and is determined by the Technical Grammy Committee annually. (Technology Grammy Awards are awarded to individuals who have made breakthroughs, important, outstanding and influential contributions to outstanding technology and innovation in the recording field during their lifetime.)

Looking forward to the 65th Grammy Awards in 2023, an album's playing time must exceed 75% of the new recording (within five years of the release date), and the previously unreleased record will be eligible for Grammy consideration. * The current eligibility rule is 50%. (Note: The best compilation soundtrack, the best historical album, the best immersive audio album, the best recording package, the best special package and the best album notes accept non-newly recorded recording albums.)
